Microneedling Q & A

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling works by harnessing your body’s innate healing powers. The process uses a treatment handpiece covered in thin, sterile needles to create thousands of tiny channels into the deeper layers of skin.

Your body perceives each of these micropunctures as a tiny injury and rushes to launch a healing reaction. Circulation to the area increases, and inflammation eases. New collagen and other tissues are produced, which serve to smooth and tighten your skin.

Many people choose microneedling because they want to avoid more invasive options like plastic surgery. Some are not good candidates for light-based therapies. Others are drawn to microneedling because it offers a natural way to improve the appearance of your skin.

What kinds of skin issues can microneedling treat?

Microneedling prompts a number of improvements in your skin. While this medical aesthetics treatment is most commonly performed on the face, microneedling is also a great option for other areas of your body.

Some of the skin issues microneedling improves include:

  • Loose or sagging skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone

Microneedling is also an effective treatment option for certain types of alopecia (hair loss) as well as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

What kind of recovery is needed after microneedling sessions?

Expect your skin to appear slightly swollen and red in the days after your microneedling treatment. A degree of soreness is also normal but can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Your skin will quickly adjust, and these changes should subside within a week. Be sure to avoid using any harsh products on the treated skin, and don’t scrub or rub your skin while cleansing. You should also not expose your skin to high temperatures in the bath or sauna.

Wear high-quality sunscreen to protect against ultraviolet rays. Wear a hat to provide additional protection if you plan on spending time outdoors.

You might notice improvements right away, but it can take a few months for the full effects of microneedling to develop. A series of treatments spread out over time often yields the best results.
